NoteSono vs Mentalyc: Which AI Notes Tool for UK Therapists?
Mentalyc is one of the best-known AI clinical notes platforms, built for the US market. If you're a UK therapist comparing it with NoteSono, the decision comes down to a few things: data and UK GDPR, pricing currency, and how much of Mentalyc's broader feature set you'll actually use.
We make NoteSono, so weigh our view accordingly. This comparison uses publicly available information from each company, checked in October 2026.

Where NoteSono may be the better fit
Clear answers on data
NoteSono is ICO registered and comes with a Data Processing Agreement written for UK GDPR. Your notes are stored in the EU. Some AI processing uses providers outside the UK and EU under data processing terms that exclude training on your data. Mentalyc is a strong platform, but its published compliance claims are US-led (HIPAA, SOC 2), so a UK therapist needs to ask about UK GDPR terms and the transfer mechanism, and reflect the answers in their privacy notice. You should name any tool you use in your privacy notice, NoteSono included.
No session recording
Mentalyc supports recording live sessions as one of its capture methods. NoteSono does not record your sessions: it works from a short summary you give after the client has left. That removes the consent and storage questions that come with recording clinical sessions, though you still need to tell clients that AI helps write their notes.
Pricing in pounds, with a free plan
NoteSono is billed in GBP, and the free plan gives you 5 notes a month with no time limit. Mentalyc bills in USD, so each payment depends on the exchange rate, and many UK bank cards add a foreign transaction fee. Mentalyc's tiers also cap the number of notes.
Where Mentalyc has genuinely more to offer
Cross-session analytics and treatment continuity
Mentalyc offers alliance reports and symptom trends drawn from session content. This is a more automated, data-rich approach than NoteSono currently offers. If tracking client progress and relationship dynamics across the entire course of therapy — with minimal manual input — is your priority, Mentalyc's feature set is more built out in this specific area.
Flexible capture methods
Mentalyc lets you record live sessions, upload audio, dictate a recap or type a description, whichever fits your workflow. NoteSono only supports the post-session summary approach. If you specifically want the option to capture full session audio (accepting the additional consent and compliance requirements that come with it), Mentalyc offers that; NoteSono does not.
Track record and breadth
Mentalyc has a longer track record in the market and a broad template library, including psychiatry and EMDR templates on its higher tiers, plus supervision notes.
The honest summary
If your main priorities are UK-focused terms, no session recording, and pricing in pounds with a free plan, NoteSono was built for that. If you want automated cross-session analytics and alliance reports, and you're comfortable doing the UK GDPR checks on a US-based tool, Mentalyc is a strong, well-established option.
